Synopsis[]
Every girl who had taken the test has died.
Now it's Kate's turn.
It's always been just Kate and her mom - and her mother is dying. Her last wish? To move back to her childhood home. So Kate's going to start at a new school with no friends, no other family and the fear that her mother won't live past the fall.
Then she meets Henry. Dark. Tortured. And mesmerizing. He claims to be Hades, god of the Underworld – and if she accepts his bargain, he'll keep her mother alive while Kate tries to pass seven tests.
Kate is sure he's crazy—until she sees him bring a girl back from the dead. Now saving her mother seems crazily possible. If she succeeds, she'll become Henry's future bride and a goddess.
Chapters[]
- Eden: We are introduced to Kate Winters, your average, not-so-average teenager begrudgingly moving from New York to the remote town of Eden (her mother's hometown) for the inevitable last days of her mom's battle with cancer. Along the road, neither of them begins to speak until her mother briefly mentions wanting to see “Eden Manor”, and seeing it shortly, continues to drive on. *At the Prologue, a conversation is held between one Henry and Diana, who are brokenhearted over the death of another girl. Poor Henry wants to give in, but Diana decides to have an actual baby instead.
- Ava: It's Kate's first day of school and surprisingly catches the eye of the most popular kid (Dylan) and the ire of his girlfriend (Ava) simultaneously. But at least she gets a love interest/friend called James, which we will remember later. Out of nowhere, Ava decides to invite Kate to a remote river party, and with no suspicion whatsoever (and with the help of her mother and Sofia), Kate decides to dress up.
- The River: Shocker, no one is there. Ava tries to dip Kate and leaves her mulling over her now revealed phobia for water, when Ava bumps her head into a rock, earning instant death.
- The Stranger: Earning the pity of a completely merciful heroine, Kate sees her floating and takes her out of water unto dry land (I think). Then a tall, dark, mysterious and handsome stranger (per usual) shows up and calls himself Henry (of all names), practically telling her to dry those tears because Ava deserved it. Kate, oh so kind, insists that even so, she still deserves to live. He realizes in his mind he is kinda lonely, so makes a deal with Kate to hear from her a certain day at midnight for her choice to take the Goddess Test, or let Ava die and live her life. He vanishes as handsome strangers do, leaving Kate confused and a revived Ava even more so.
- The Equinox: Turns out this death experience has completely changed Ava as a person to a becoming a bottled up existential crisis (when you're so good at being bad, your body just can't handle being good at being good). James is unfazed with the story of resurrected Ava and believes it 100% (these things just happen so often at Eden). Eventually the day of decision comes for poor Kate just as her mom as a relapse, and like a rugged Reaper once again Henry shows up; telling her she has to spend 6 months at his posh mansion or her friend dies again. Kate storms off and decides to not believe him.
- Eden Manor: James, the messenger of doom, calls Kate one lovely morning and says, “So turns out Ava dies. Again.” Kate is shocked, and filled with guilt, despite James attempts at giving her a bagel, “it's not your fault”, “she was already dead anyway.” Furious, Kate storms to Eden manor and finally accepts Henry's proposal in the hopes of bring back Ava. He says no even when she apologizes, but accepts her deal anyway because Kate still wants to keep her mom alive (even if she only gets to communicate to her in dreams).
- The Impossible: First day at Eden manor as its most honored resident, Kate Winters complains she is still a prisoner despite the lavish clothes, food, and servants. She still continues to feel guilty of Ava's death, and in her dream mom conversation shows slight irritation and confusion on Henry. Dream mom is, however, more than happy to oblige this as sentiment and secretly ships them with no concerns whatsoever of mortal and immortal relationships (Greek mythology trauma where are you?). She is then woken up by her personal lady's in waiting, one sweet and effervescent Calliope and one somber and gentle Ella. Both arm wrestle her into a luxurious dress, our main protagonist doesn't want to wear, but does anyway. After devouring breakfast, she meets Henry again in your -insert here—forest and his lovely dog of nightmares, Cerberus. Everything goes great until his ex Persephone is brought up.
- Ava's Return: Our mean queen is still very much dead yet because this is Eden Manor/Underworld we are talking here, this is great news. Dead Ava and Kate play dress up for a ball that would lead to her acceptance of taking the “Goddess Test” and her first meeting with the council of gods.
- The Ball: Kate has another dream mom escape discussing over Henry = Hades, which to her surprise is very short when her mom (suspiciously) wholeheartedly believes this, indicated the very possibility of their communications via dream cloud in the first place. She is lead to an empty throne room all vacant except for Henry, who reassures that they hear her, and their voices. They ask her if she wants to take the g-o-double d test and she says yes. Dream mom continues to ship Kate-Henry (Kanry? Hete? idk).
- The First Test: With the same pressure and anxiety of a student taking the SAT, Kate receives a crash course on "Greek Mythology for dummies" by Irene. This leads Kate to a massive series of all nighters and study sessions, until the dreadful day arrives and she FAILS.
